An endocrine surgeon must know how to manage the patient\u2019s hormonal status before, during, and after surgery. Because even the smallest intervention on one of these glands can create a domino effect that impacts the entire body. For this reason, surgeons working in this field operate as a team and stay in constant communication with specialists in endocrinology (hormone science), radiology, and pathology. The patient\u2019s journey usually begins with a diagnosis by an endocrinologist, and when surgery is needed, the most accurate treatment plan is created through this teamwork.<\/p>\n<p>The main focus areas of endocrine surgery are as follows:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Thyroid Gland<\/li>\n<li>Parathyroid Glands<\/li>\n<li>Adrenal Glands<\/li>\n<li>Neuroendocrine Tumors of the Pancreas<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Now let\u2019s take a closer look at the diseases of these organs and their surgical treatment processes.<\/p>\n<h2>In Which Situations Does Thyroid Gland Surgery Become an Option?<\/h2>\n<p>The butterfly-shaped thyroid gland, located at the front of the neck like a shield, is the body\u2019s energy powerhouse. There are various reasons that may lead to surgery due to problems that arise in this organ. The main conditions that require thyroid surgery are as follows:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Thyroid cancer or suspicion of cancer<\/li>\n<li>Goiter that puts pressure on the windpipe or esophagus<\/li>\n<li>Large goiter that is noticeable from the outside and causes cosmetic concerns<\/li>\n<li>Toxic goiter (hyperthyroidism) that does not respond to medication or when medication cannot be used<\/li>\n<li>Nodules with suspicious fine-needle biopsy results that require a definitive diagnosis<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2>Which Steps Are Followed Before a Thyroid Surgery Decision Is Made?<\/h2>\n<p>No thyroid surgery is undertaken unprepared. It is like a meticulous detective process, and each step determines the next move. The process begins by listening to the patient\u2019s story. Is there thyroid cancer in the family? Was radiation therapy to the neck area received in the past? Did the nodule grow suddenly? The answers to these questions help us map out the risk. Then, during the physical examination, the size and firmness of the nodule and the status of lymph nodes in the neck are carefully checked by hand.<\/p>\n<p>After this first step, blood tests come into play. The TSH (Thyroid-Stimulating Hormone) level, checked with a simple blood test, provides very valuable information about the nodule\u2019s \u201ccharacter.\u201d If TSH is low, this may indicate that the nodule is overactive and producing hormones. The cancer risk of these \u201chot\u201d nodules is almost zero, and further examination is generally not necessary. However, if TSH is normal or high, the nodule is considered \u201ccold\u201d and must be examined closely because it carries a risk of cancer.<\/p>\n<p>At this point, high-resolution neck ultrasonography, the closest friend of endocrine surgery, takes the stage. Ultrasound essentially takes an internal picture of the thyroid and shows us all the details of the nodule.
