This condition usually develops after abscesses, and when it becomes chronic, surgery is the definitive treatment.

In anal fistula surgery, the fistula tract may be excised or a seton technique may be used. The choice of technique is determined by the location of the fistula and its proximity to the sphincter muscles. The goal is both to achieve healing and to preserve muscle function.

Wound hygiene is very important in postoperative care. Regular dressing changes, sitz baths, and a fiber-rich diet support the process. Patients can return to normal life within a few days, but full healing may take several weeks.

The success rate after anal fistula surgery is high. The risk of recurrence depends on the structure of the fistula. A specialist surgical approach both accelerates recovery and reduces the risk of possible complications.

What You Need to Know

Information

Definition

An anal fistula is an abnormal tunnel that forms between the anus and the skin as a result of drainage from an infected gland around the anus. Surgery is performed to close or remove this tunnel.

Purpose

To eliminate infection and discharge, reduce pain, prevent recurrence, and preserve anal function.

Surgical Methods

Various techniques may be used, such as fistulotomy (opening the fistula tract), fistulectomy (complete excision of the fistula), seton placement, advancement flap, the LIFT technique, and laser treatment.

Type of Anesthesia

Spinal or general anesthesia is usually preferred; in superficial fistulas, it can also be performed under local anesthesia.

Duration of Surgery

On average, it lasts between 20 and 60 minutes; it depends on the depth and complexity of the fistula.

Length of Hospital Stay

Most patients are discharged the same day; in some complex cases, a 1-night hospital stay may be required.

Recovery Process

It may take 2–4 weeks for superficial fistulas and 6–8 weeks for complex fistulas. Regular dressing changes are required.

Possible Complications

Infection, recurrence, stool or gas leakage (incontinence), and wound-healing problems may occur.

Pain Management

There may be pain and tenderness in the anal area after surgery; it is controlled with oral painkillers.

Wound Care

Daily dressing is required. Warm sitz baths are recommended for cleansing. Antiseptic solutions may be used.

Bowel Regularity

Constipation should be avoided. A fiber-rich diet and plenty of water are recommended. Stool softeners may be used if necessary.

Physical Activity

Light walks can be started early; sitting time is increased gradually. Heavy exercise should be avoided for 4–6 weeks.

Risk of Recurrence

The risk of recurrence is higher especially in complex, deep fistulas close to the sphincter muscles.

Follow-up Process

A follow-up is recommended within the first week; monitoring should be carried out at regular intervals until the fistula closes.

Quality of Life

After successful surgery, symptoms disappear and the patient’s quality of life improves significantly.

Contact Us.

You can request an online appointment by filling out the form. During this period, the patient’s patience and strict adherence to the doctor’s recommendations both speed up healing and prevent possible problems. Although the healing process varies from person to person and depending on the type of surgery performed, what to pay attention to is generally similar.

Some important steps that will increase your postoperative comfort and help your recovery include:

Using prescribed painkillers regularly

Taking warm sitz baths several times a day

Drinking at least 2–2.5 liters of water per day

Paying attention to a fiber-rich diet

Not neglecting stool softeners prescribed by the doctor

Cleaning the area gently with water after using the toilet

Taking light-paced walks in the first weeks

Avoiding heavy lifting and strenuous exercise

One of the most important elements of this process is pain control. Especially the first bowel movement can be quite painful. To make it easier, it may be helpful to use painkillers regularly and take a dose about half an hour before defecation. However, the most effective way to reduce pain and relax the area is warm sitz baths. These baths both relax the muscles and keep the area clean.

Preventing constipation is vital. Hard stool not only causes unbearable pain but can also damage stitches or sensitive tissues in the surgical area. Therefore, drinking plenty of water, consuming fiber-rich foods, and using stool softeners prescribed by the doctor are essential.

Regarding wound care, it is usually sufficient to keep the area clean and dry. Mild discharge from the wound for several weeks is normal and part of healing. Not missing follow-up appointments scheduled by your doctor is very important to ensure the wound is healing properly from the base to the surface.

What Should Patients Pay Attention to After Anal Fistula Surgery?

The surgery is over, the wounds have healed, and you have taken a comfortable breath. So what now? To ensure that the comfort achieved after anal fistula surgery is lasting and to minimize the risk of recurrence, it is very important to adopt certain lifestyle habits. These habits are beneficial not only for anal health but also for overall health.

For long-term protection of your health, there are things you should pay attention to:

Making a high-fiber diet a lasting habit

Never neglecting adequate water intake

Not sitting on the toilet for a long time and not straining

Always paying attention to local hygiene

A healthy digestive system reduces pressure in the anal region. Therefore, a diet rich in vegetables, fruits, and whole grains ensures that stool is always soft. Drinking at least 2 liters of water a day is the most important complement to this diet. Not postponing the urge to use the toilet and not spending long periods on the toilet with a phone or book are also good habits to adopt.

In addition, you should learn to listen to your body. Even after the surgical area has fully healed, certain warning signs should be taken seriously. If you experience any of the following, you should contact the surgeon who performed your operation rather than saying, “I’ll wait a bit, it will pass.”

Warning signs that require contacting your doctor include:

New discharge starting from a previously healed area

Recurrent pain, tenderness, or swelling at or near the surgical site

Fever or a general feeling of fatigue accompanying local complaints

Frequently Asked Questions

How long does the recovery process take after anal fistula surgery?

Recovery after surgery is usually completed within 4 to 6 weeks.
