With this surgery, problems such as bowel entrapment and pain are eliminated, and quality of life is improved.

In hernia repair, open or laparoscopic surgical methods may be preferred. When necessary, the abdominal wall is strengthened using a synthetic mesh and recurrence of the hernia is prevented. The choice of method is made according to the patient’s condition.

In the early postoperative period, rest and regular mobilization are important. Avoiding heavy activities accelerates the healing process. Paying attention to the diet contributes to the process by reducing intra-abdominal pressure.

The risk of complications after epigastric hernia repair is low. Although rare, infection, hematoma, or hernia recurrence may occur. Surgical experience and regular follow-up help achieve positive long-term outcomes.

What You Need to Know

Information

Description of the Surgery

Epigastric hernia surgery is the surgical repair of fatty tissue or intestines protruding through a weak point in the anterior abdominal wall, in the area between the navel and the rib cage.

Cause of Formation

A hernia occurs due to a congenital or gradually developing weakness in the midline of the abdominal muscles (linea alba). Conditions such as excess weight, heavy lifting, chronic cough, or pregnancy increase the risk.

Symptoms

Swelling on the midline of the abdomen, a bulge that becomes more prominent especially with coughing or straining, pain or a feeling of discomfort.

Surgical Methods

Open surgery or the laparoscopic (closed) method may be used. While repair with sutures alone can be performed in small hernias, reinforcement with mesh is preferred in large hernias.

Type of Anesthesia

Usually performed under general anesthesia; local or spinal anesthesia may also be used for small hernias.

Duration of Surgery

On average, it takes 30–60 minutes. It may take a bit longer in laparoscopic procedures.

Length of Hospital Stay

In small hernias, discharge can be on the same day; in cases requiring mesh, a 1-day hospital stay may be recommended.

Recovery Process

Light daily activities can be resumed in about 1–2 weeks. Full recovery and the period of avoiding heavy lifting is 4–6 weeks.

Complications

Complications such as infection, bleeding, hernia recurrence, nerve damage, and fluid accumulation at the wound site (seroma) may occur.

Use of Mesh

In large hernias, a synthetic mesh is used to prevent re-herniation of the weakened area. The mesh is made of special materials accepted by the body.

Risk of Recurrence

While the risk of recurrence is low in small hernias, it may increase in large hernias that are not reinforced with mesh.

Postoperative Care

The wound area should be kept dry and clean. Sutures may dissolve on their own or may be removed after follow-up.

Return to Physical Activity

Rest is recommended in the first weeks, followed by a return to activity with controlled exercises. Heavy sports should be postponed for at least 6 weeks.

Contact Us.

You can request an online appointment by filling out the form. Knowing what you will encounter during this process will reduce your concerns.

You are usually discharged on the day of surgery or the next day. It is normal to feel pain during the first few days after surgery, and this can be easily controlled with the painkillers prescribed to you. Since your wound site will be covered with waterproof tapes, there is no problem with taking a shower. It is important not to become constipated during the healing process, so you are asked to consume plenty of fluids and high-fiber foods and not to strain the repair area by pushing.

One of the most frequently wondered about issues is when you can return to normal life. You are encouraged to start walking immediately after surgery. If you have a desk job, you can usually return to work within a week. However, the most critical point of healing is limiting the load on the abdominal wall for a while. During this period, there are some activities you should avoid:

Heavy lifting (more than 5 kg)

Pushing or pulling movements

Exercises that strain the abdominal muscles such as sit-ups

High-intensity sports

These restrictions generally last for 4 to 6 weeks. This period is necessary for the mesh to integrate with the body tissues and for the repair to reach its strongest state. After you get through this period carefully, you can gradually return to all your normal activities and sports with your doctor’s approval.

What Those Who Have an Epigastric Hernia Should Pay Attention To

While living with a diagnosis of an epigastric hernia, during the period until you have surgery, or if you are not considering surgery, there are some important points you should pay attention to both to protect yourself and to prevent the condition from worsening:

First and most importantly, do not forget the emergency warning signs of hernia strangulation. In situations such as severe and persistent pain, a hard swelling that cannot be reduced, nausea, and vomiting, you should never waste time. Remember that hernias do not go away over time like a muscle pain; on the contrary, they are a permanent tear in the abdominal wall, and the only permanent solution is surgery. During this process, there are some steps you can take to slow the growth of the hernia and improve your general health. These steps will also increase the success of a possible surgery.
