It is most commonly used in conditions such as colon cancer, diverticulitis, or bowel obstruction, with the goal of improving health and quality of life.

After the affected segment is removed, the two healthy ends of the bowel are usually reconnected. This reconnection is called an anastomosis and helps maintain normal digestive function. In some situations, however, a temporary or permanent stoma may be required.

The postoperative recovery process is closely related to how bowel function readjusts. A nutrition plan is typically arranged to support digestive adaptation, and patients are monitored closely for infection risk and other complications.

Possible complications after colon resection include bleeding, infection, and anastomotic leakage. For this reason, careful evaluation of risk factors before surgery and regular follow-up after surgery are essential.

What You Need to Know

Information

Definition

Colon resection is the surgical removal of a portion of the large intestine (colon).

Purpose

Performed to treat conditions such as cancer, diverticulitis, Crohn’s disease, ulcerative colitis, bowel obstruction, or trauma.

Surgical Approaches

Open surgery (laparotomy) and minimally invasive (laparoscopic) techniques are available.

Types of Resection

Includes right/left hemicolectomy, sigmoid colectomy, subtotal colectomy, and total colectomy.

Duration

Usually lasts about 1.5–4 hours, depending on the technique and complexity of the case.

Anesthesia

Performed under general anesthesia.

Hospital Stay

Typically 4–7 days. class="ez-toc-section" id="In_Which_Situations_Is_Colon_Resection_Necessary">In Which Situations Is Colon Resection Necessary?

The decision for colon surgery can be made for many different health problems. Sometimes it is planned after careful evaluation, while in other cases it becomes unavoidable to address an emergency.

One of the most common reasons is colon cancer. The goal of surgery is to remove not only the tumor but also nearby lymph nodes that may carry microscopic spread. This helps determine the exact stage and improves treatment success. Colon resection may also be required for large, high-risk polyps that cannot be removed safely during colonoscopy.

Diverticular disease is another frequent reason. Diverticulitis is inflammation of small pouches in the bowel wall. While it is often treated with medications, surgery is required when serious complications occur. These include:

Perforation (a hole in the bowel)

Abscess formation in the abdomen

Fistula to nearby organs such as the bladder

Complete bowel obstruction

Severe bleeding that cannot be controlled

Frequent recurrent attacks that reduce quality of life

Inflammatory bowel diseases (IBD) such as Crohn’s disease and ulcerative colitis may also require surgery. In Crohn’s disease, surgery does not cure the condition but helps manage complications. In ulcerative colitis, removing the entire colon can eliminate the disease. Indications in this group include:

Failure to respond to medical therapy

Strictures that block intestinal passage

Uncontrolled infection or abscess formation

Development of cancer or precancerous changes

Toxic megacolon is an emergency where the colon becomes dangerously enlarged, with a high risk of perforation.

Sometimes colon resection is decided urgently in the emergency setting. In these cases, the priority is life-saving treatment rather than the most cosmetic repair. Emergencies include:

Complete bowel obstruction due to a tumor or another cause

Severe traumatic bowel injury that cannot be repaired

Loss of blood supply leading to bowel death (ischemia/gangrene)

Which Part of the Colon Is Removed During Colon Resection?

The type of surgery depends on the location and extent of disease. The surgeon removes the affected segment along with a safety margin of healthy tissue.

For example, if the disease is in the cecum or ascending colon, the right side of the colon is removed—this is called a right hemicolectomy. The last part of the small intestine is then connected to the remaining colon.

If the disease involves the descending colon or sigmoid colon, the left side is removed—this may be called a left hemicolectomy or sigmoid colectomy. The remaining bowel ends are reconnected.

More rarely, in conditions like familial polyposis syndromes or widespread ulcerative colitis, removal of the entire colon may be necessary. This is called a total colectomy.

Which Surgical Methods Are Used for Colon Resection?

Today, colon resection can be performed using three main approaches. Each has its own advantages and limitations, and the best choice depends on the patient, the disease, and the surgeon’s experience.

Traditional Open Surgery

This is the classic method, performed through a larger abdominal incision. It provides direct access and a broad view. It can be the most reliable option in emergencies, in widespread infection, in severe adhesions, or when the tumor is very large.

Advantages include:

Rapid access to the abdomen

Wide visualization and working space

Ability to assess tissues by direct touch

Disadvantages may include:

Larger scar

More postoperative pain

Longer hospital stay

Slower recovery

Higher risk of incisional hernia

Laparoscopic Surgery (Minimally Invasive)

Also called “keyhole surgery,” this method uses several small (0.5–1 cm) incisions instead of one large cut. A camera and specialized instruments are inserted, and the abdomen is inflated with gas to create working space. The surgeon operates while viewing a monitor.

Key benefits include:

Less postoperative pain

Smaller and more cosmetic scars

Shorter hospital stay

Faster return to daily life

Less blood loss

Lower infection risk

Challenges may include:

Long learning curve for surgeons

Reduced depth perception with 2D imaging in some systems

Limited instrument range of motion

Possible conversion to open surgery in difficult cases

Robotic Surgery

Robotic surgery is the most advanced minimally invasive option. Like laparoscopy, it uses small incisions, but the surgeon controls robotic arms from a nearby console using a high-definition 3D view. Robotic instruments can mimic (and refine) wrist-like movements with very high precision.

Advantages compared with laparoscopy may include:

Magnified 3D vision (improved depth perception)

Elimination of hand tremor

Wristed instruments with wide-range motion

Superior maneuverability in narrow, deep spaces

More ergonomic working conditions for the surgeon

With these benefits, robotic surgery may result in:

Less blood loss

Lower conversion rates to open surgery

More precise work in areas where nerve preservation is critical

Potential disadvantages include:

Higher overall cost

Slightly longer operative time during the learning phase

Contact Us.

You can request an online appointment by filling out the form. With modern pain management strategies, reliance on opioids such as morphine (which can slow bowel function) is reduced. Many patients are encouraged to stand and walk on the first postoperative day—sometimes even the same evening. Early mobilization is one of the most effective ways to prevent lung problems and blood clots.

Nutrition is also started as early as possible. Many patients begin with liquids on the day after surgery and progress toward a normal diet quickly as tolerated. This helps the intestines resume function sooner.

Discharge typically requires meeting criteria such as:

Pain controlled with oral medications

Ability to tolerate solid foods

Ability to walk independently

Return of bowel function (passing gas and/or stool) is also an important milestone.

After discharge, patients should watch for “red flag” symptoms and contact their doctor promptly if they occur:

Fever above 38°C (100.4°F)

Increasing abdominal pain

Nausea and vomiting

Wound drainage, redness, or swelling

Shortness of breath or chest pain

What Are the Long-Term Effects and Risks After Colon Resection?

Colon resection is a major operation, and like any surgery it carries both early and late risks.

The most serious early complications include:

Anastomotic leak

Intra-abdominal or wound infection

Bleeding

Deep vein thrombosis (blood clot in the leg veins)

Pulmonary embolism (clot traveling to the lungs)

Ileus (temporary bowel paralysis)

In the long term, adhesions in the abdomen can cause pain or bowel obstruction years later. An incisional hernia may develop at the surgical scar.

The most common long-term change is altered bowel habits. Since part of the colon is removed, some patients may have more frequent bowel movements, diarrhea, or constipation. Over time, many people adapt by learning what diet and routines work best for their “new normal.”

In surgeries performed deep in the pelvis—such as for rectal cancer—nerves responsible for sexual function and urinary control can be at risk. Injury to these nerves may cause long-term sexual dysfunction or urinary problems. This is one area where robotic surgery can provide an advantage: magnified 3D vision and highly precise, tremor-free instrument control may help protect delicate nerve networks. This is not only a technological benefit but also a step aimed at preserving long-term quality of life.

For patients who live with a permanent stoma, modern stoma systems and proper education make daily life highly manageable. Many patients return to active social, professional, and personal lives while feeling secure and comfortable.

Frequently Asked Questions

For which diseases is colon resection performed?

Colon resection is performed to remove diseased bowel segments in conditions such as tumors, large polyps, diverticulitis, ulcerative colitis, or bowel obstruction.
